1. The interviewer doesn’t let you talk but schedules you for a second interview.
I really love marketing but since I don’t have any marketing experience besides internet marketing for my blog I was looking for an entry level position. I interviewed at so many “marketing firms” that really turned out to be more like sales and since I definitely did not want to work nights and weekends this was really not my cup of tea. I was had one interview with a marketing company and the interviewer talked the whole time, was basically trying to sell me on the company and hook me in to believing that I will be making a lot of money. It sounded great and all but not once did he ask about me. It was all about him and “how much money he makes”. I don’t care that you make more than six figures, if it costs me my soul there is no way I am signing up for that. If the person interviewing you has to convince you that it’s a great job and chats your ear off while you sit there and then signs you up for a second interview that should be a huge red flag. Don’t you want your employer to want to hire you because they like you? This type of interviewer doesn’t care about you, they are trying to get you because they need the employee numbers up, which leads me into my next type of interviewer.
2. The interviewer talks to every prospective employee and employs them all.
I went into one interview and by the time I had left there were 10 other interviewees that had come in for the same position. Not only did we all get to interview, but we were all offered jobs and that was just in one hour. They had interviews scheduled all day. This means the company has a very high turn over rate which screams UNHEALTHY WORK ENVIRONMENT. I am sure that there are some people who come out of that job on top but do you really want to work in an unstable company? Not me!
3. The interviewer who doesn’t directly answer your questions.
This interviewer is the worst! After a slew of awful interviews I had been through, I just wanted to work with someone who I felt was honest. This interviewer was asking me if I had anymore questions and every question I asked, he would completely redirect. I just wanted yes or no but he couldn’t deliver that to me. This generally means that there is something they are hiding from you because they know you would not take the job so they are going to wait until you sign on the dotted line before hitting you with the big awful secret. You have to be careful of shady people, because generally shady people work for shady companies.
4. Acts like you’re interviewing for a ceo position when it’s an entry level position.
This was probably the interview that had me laughing as I walked out. I am pretty confident in my abilities. I am a hard worker and if I don’t know how to do something I will teach myself. I went into this one interview with an interviewer for an entry level position and she was asking me things that made me feel like my job was the guy that was in charge of pushing the button for the release of nuclear war fare. This type of company can put a lot of pressure on you and make you feel as though you are never good enough or you don’t work enough making you have to completely give up your personal life and be married to your job. I have a husband thank you very much, I’m not going to leave him for my career.
When you are interviewing be careful of these types of companies. Remember, in most cases you spend more time at your job than you do at home so make sure the company you work for lines up with your values, culture, and schedule.
My husband and I had the honor of attending a Big Brother trivia event last night at Landmark Bar and Kitchen in the West 7th district of Fort Worth. The hosts of this event were season 19’s cutest showmance Mark Jansen and Elena Davies, more popularly known from the show as, MarLena. If you thought they were a cute couple on the show, you should see them in person.
Mark is one of the nicest people on the face of the planet and although you probably already knew that if you watched any part of the show, it couldn’t truer. He loves Elena and is a solid foundation for her. Without her even trying she brings the biggest smile to his face. You can tell that Mark is a bit more of an introvert than Elena but he was more than gracious to take pictures with all the fans and endure Elena and I blabbering on for far too long, so thanks Mark, you’re the real MVP!
Elena is a firecracker! She is the girl at the party who walks in and in 30 minutes knows everybody’s name and life story. She is so likable, outgoing, and undeniably herself. She has witty quick humor that had my husband and I laughing in tears at some points. She is clearly the extrovert in their relationship. The most inspirational thing about Elena is that she has healthy confidence. I feel like she is the person who is like, ‘Take it or Leave it’. She is herself and if you don’t like that then you can move right along because she doesn’t want toxic people in her life. She is truly someone who you want to be around because of her confidence and I mean come on… She is a total babe, so that helps.
After the trivia game they answered questions from the audience and were not afraid to talk about the hot topics such as Paul running the house and taking things further than just a game player, but someone who was hurtful. They talked about Josh and his relentless annoyance. I could never live in a house with Josh so props to them. Elena’s favorite person in the house, besides Mark of course, which was Ramses. I really wish CBS would have put more of Ramses in the show because from the way she was talking about him, he seams way cool.
I want to say a big shout out to Landmark for having the event at their facility, giving me the best seats in the house, and making a really yummy Big Brother inspired drink menu which I think they should leave on forever. An even BIGGER shout out to Ellis County Blue Line Moving Co. For funding the event and making it happen! Elena used them when her and Mark moved into their house together and highly recommended them for all moving needs! If you use the name Marlena when booking Ellis County Blue Line Moving they will give you 10% off.
All in all the event was super fun and we were so excited to be able to meet Marlena after and chat.
I think every girl at least once in her life has felt like she wore a scarlet letter. Like everyone was looking at her differently because of what was said or done. My life is full of scarlet letters. From junior high until now I can say that I have had my fair share in some true and untrue scandals. But if there is anything I have learned from them it’s this: You can’t control what people say about you, but you can control how you react. I had a friend one time ask me how I always got back up on my feet after someone made awful rumors about me. I thought about it for a while and my response was, “They may think that about me, but I don’t think that about me and I know it’s not true.” A simple statement that carried me through some tough times. I have pretty thick skin and I try not to let words get to me but we all have our weak moments. My whole life I have felt like my personal life was pretty exposed and I was just trying to keep everything on the DL so I didn’t give someone yet another thing to talk about. I used to struggle and think, “What is it about my life that people think they are so entitled to talk about and make assumptions?” It wasn’t like I was trying, so why do I get the “joy” of having my personal business on everyone’s lips? I was more afraid of what lie was going to be said than what the truth was.
With time there is something that I have learned. I have a gift of giving people something to talk about. My whole life I had seen the negative effects but if I could take my gift and actually use it, how greatly could I effect my community?! Here is the thing, don’t let peoples words effect your actions, but instead, let your actions effect peoples words.
I have grown so much and found incredible people to do life with. I have an irreplaceable life that I’m not going to give up. You are irreplaceable. You are cherished. And you are loved. I hope this encouraged you today! I love every one of you.
